Components of a photovoltaic system
Solar energy has become one of the most preferred choice of renewable energy source due to its various benefits including accessibility, fast deployment and scalability
In this blog, let us understand what are the different parts or components of a solar panel system or photovoltaic system
Photovoltaic System:
The solar system installed at home is also known as PV system or photovoltaic systems which derives its name from photovoltaic effect which is the generation of electricity by certain materials when they are exposed to light. Besides the very much visible solar panels there are certain other important components that come together and work in harmony to maximize the benefit of solar power for your home.
The main parts of a solar panel system at home:
1.Solar Panels :
These are the most identifiable components associated with solar power. The solar panels look like a blue or black colored flat part which is normally rectangular in shape. The solar panels are an array of many solar cells joined together in series to offer high voltage output. All these cells convert the sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. These solar panels are usually covered with a thin layer of plastic or glass for protection.
2.Mounting Structure:
To secure the solar panels on any surface a mounting structure is needed. These also help to position the panels towards the sunlight to optimize their efficiency. These racks on which solar panels are mounted are made of strong metals and provide stability to solar panels
3.Inverter:
The solar panels generate electricity in the form of DC current which is converted to AC current by the inverter as the household appliances run on AC current and not on DC current.
4.Solar battery:
Solar battery is an additional component of the solar system but it is an essential part which helps to store the excess electricity produced to be stored for later use. In a way it helps to get maximum benefits from solar power by offering a reliable source of power on the days when there is less sunlight like on cloudy or rainy days. The solar battery also provides uninterrupted power to homes in situations when electricity from the grid is not available.
4.Net Meter:
If the solar system is grid tied then a net meter is also installed. It measures the amount of electricity that the home takes up from the grid and feeds back to the grid. It allows for the calculation of the compensation received for the extra energy that is sent back to the grid.
Apart from these components, there are other important parts like monitoring systems. Wiring and accessories and breaker box. They help in various functions of the PV system like offering real time data of the energy provided, carrying electricity supply to various parts of the home, etc.
Summary
Solar or PV system has many different parts that perform different functions to help your home get a steady power supply. The size and configuration of each of them varies according to the location.
